The quiet start to the week continued on Wednesday with Grange a late non-runner.

I talked of a maximum on thursday. Having been very confident that would be the case, i was surprised by jockey bookings for the Al Raihe stable at Meydan. It's not unusual for the stable to have multiple runners in a race, and though Royston Ffrench isn't always on their best, he usually rides ROCHDALE (Meydan 4.10). That and the fact that the horse is nine now conspire to cloud the picture somewhat and I've had a slight change of heart. Will back it but not as a max.

In the last four seasons the horse has form figures (always after a break) in November at Meydan and Jebel Ali reading 3,1,2,2,1,1,1,1.  (two runs each November, so even if this isn't the day, well worth siding with if reappearing quickly).
That form is not far off a cash machine and it might well be worth at least playing the horse in the place market, and also with a percentage of the stake on a win bet. Ffrench is on stablemate Zain Shamardahl instead. The yard started with a double last week so a reverse forecast is another option.

Elsewhere it's another 'selective' day for the blog. Decentish ground permitting, i will be backing DUBH GO LEIR (Thurles 2.55). this horse though, do note, has three good runs on decentish ground and two poor ones on soft. The best run was when giving Seefood a very decent race on third career start. That one scored next time out and on Wednesday won a really warm little event at Fairyhouse. It appears to me to be the best form on offer for this event and given satisfactory ground can take this maiden hurdle.

At Musselburgh, after a promising effort last time, MENTALIST (Musselburgh 2.30) is well in on these terms and could win over the bigger obstacles. A promising reappearance at Bangor last time when second and Venetia Williams would be a rare visitor to the Scottish track.

Although i won't be backing his mount, Richie McGrath is riding off 10 stone in the first at the Scottish venue, and he said on WH Radio he is fasting to make the weight. If that's an angle you like his ride in that event is worth a look.

Thanks for popping in and good luck if you have a flutter on any of the above! As ever remember you are solely responsible for your own bets, though I'm sure I don't really need to remind you! :)
